Ryan's Science Fair Entry

Ryan had to do a Science Fair project. I helped him pick a topic and it turned out pretty fun! His question was 'Is an egg stronger up and down or on it's side?'. He made two holders out of modeling clay, one for the up and down eggs and one for the eggs on the side. Then he balanced a lightweight cutting board on a piece of wood and the egg in its holder. He piled books on top of the cutting board until the egg broke. Then he counted and weighed the books, and drew a sketch of the broken egg. Then he had to clean up the shells and the mess before he could do the next egg. He did six eggs upright and six on their side. It took us TWO HOURS to break a dozen eggs. But it was a LOT of fun! He started counting down "3...2...1" and that confirmed that we watch WAY TOO MUCH Mythbusters in our home :)

In case you were wondering, according to his research an egg is stronger up and down. Those eggs held an average of 18 books (or 10 pounds) while the eggs on the side only held 12 books (or 7 pounds)! He had to create a backboard with all of his information. It turned out really good! Ryan was one of four selected from his class to enter the school Science Fair competition! Congratualtions Ryan!
